Description
Perform a variety of skilled technical duties and semi-skilled labor in the operation and maintenance of the South Durango Sanitation District and Loma Linda Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Systems. Employees at this level, based on experience, will receive instruction or assistance until they become fully competent with standard operating procedures and policies of the Districts.


Essential Job Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.


Perform assigned facilities inspections, monitoring and documenting operations by reading plant equipment gauges, dials, graphs and other instrumentation.
Operate and adjust pumps, motors, feeders and other specialized equipment to maintain CDPHE permit compliance.
Maintain, compile, and update plant operations logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations
related to operational activities; input data into the computer.
Collect samples from throughout the facility and collections system; perform laboratory analyses and record, and report results according to Federal, State, and City Standards.
Maintain, repair and service operations machinery and equipment including pumps, valves, motors, meters, tanks and reservoirs; change lubrications.
Drain water traps in gas lines, air compressor and air lines; maintain plant access and cleanliness of facility
appearance and grounds.
Operate pickup truck, forklift, bobcat skid steer, and snow removal equipment to maintain plant access and
cleanliness of facility.
Load chemicals and make adjustments to treatment rates.
Respond to emergency call-out as required.
Collect water and wastewater samples and perform a variety of routine water quality laboratory tests; conduct water quality tests for pH, Alkalinity, BOD, TSS and other assigned analyses and make recommendations for adjustments, as necessary.
Perform general facility maintenance such as cleaning, painting, snow removal, and repair. Check all equipment
for proper operation and troubleshoot treatment issues.
Respond to communications from the public with questions and complaints.
Maintain and manage operations of all District lift stations
Monitor system flows for all lift stations in the collection system using SCADA.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques of the treatment of wastewater for safe discharge into the river.
General maintenance and repair related to wastewater collection and treatment systems.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Mathematical calculations including water and wastewater specific applications.
Excellent public contact and customer service skills.


Skill in:
Operating equipment and tools used in the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater systems.
Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment.
Performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance.
Utilization of computers and electronic equipment.
Conducting lab tests and analysis.
Utilizing computer software to develop complex mathematical formulas, develop data and conduct evaluation.
Reading and interpret policy and procedure manuals.
Communicating clearly and concisely primarily in verbal form.


Ability to:
Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Work the allocated hours of the position.
Work Environment:
Work environment includes frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, biological hazards, noise, dust, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.


Physical and Mental Requirements/Activities:
• This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 75 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 50 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.
• Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
• Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
• Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
• Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
• Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.


Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education and Certification: Equivalent to completion of High School or GED.
Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of experience in wastewater operations and maintenance, chemistry, biology, statistical analysis, basic electrical work, woodworking, welding or landscaping. OR, a combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to develop and perform the position duties and responsibilities.


Certifications required: Ability to obtain Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certifications D and C within 3 years of hire date.


 SALARY: $23-$25 per hour depending on experience and qualifications
