Position Summary
The Professional Advocate & Case Manager is part of a supportive team in the FLC Counseling Center responding to the mental health and wellness needs of the diverse student body at Fort Lewis College. The Professional Advocate & Case Manager assists students in decreasing barriers to mental wellness, refers, advocates for and connects students to campus and community resources, services and supports, coordinates care, and helps communicate student needs to therapists and other campus offices. This position also provides confidential advocacy services, on and off campus, to students experiencing interpersonal violence, sexual assault or harassment, stalking, or other forms of gender-based violence or harassment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in human services or related field (psychology, social work, sociology, public health, healthcare, etc.)
- Knowledge of counseling and advocacy techniques for people who have been victims of domestic violence, including crisis intervention and case management skills.
- Proven ability to understand and articulate sex and gender-related needs and concerns from a social justice, intersectional, culturally-responsive perspective that incorporates all aspects of identity.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with and respond to multiple constituencies both at the college and in the community.
- Good oral and written communication and computer skills are required.
- Experience working with college age students.
- Ability and willingness to contribute to a team-oriented work environment.
- Demonstrated abilities in leadership, openness & flexibility.
- Knowledge of how to create and maintain warm, empathetic, professional boundaries when working with vulnerable and distressed individuals.
- Personal skills of stress tolerance, non-defensiveness, and ability to receive and respond to feedback.
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more year of previous employment or volunteer work in human services, community agencies or other related nonprofits
- Case management experience
- Demonstrated skill and/or training in working with victims of relationship violence, stalking, sexual abuse or assault
- Previous work within a College/University setting
Major Responsibilities
- Collaborate with other staff in providing continuity of care and follow up for students with significant and emergent emotional and psychological needs, including survivors of sexual and gender-based violence & harassment
- Provide confidential, direct advocacy services and support to students around issues of relationship violence, stalking, and sexual assault or abuse, including navigation and education about formal and informal Title IX grievance processes & criminal justice system reporting options
- Consult and advocate with parents, treatment providers, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus treatment providers, other campus offices and staff, when appropriate and with appropriate authorization, to provide quality care to students. Make referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, when appropriate
- Educate students as needed about dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault and the resources available for survivors
- Work closely with Title IX Coordinator to receive and make referrals for Title IX grievance process when desired by students
- Providing educational, outreach and prevention programs originating from Counseling Services and Title IX offices, including information about basic needs resources
- Maintain current knowledge of community and campus resources for basic needs including public insurance enrollment options, food and shelter resources, cash benefits, identity-based supports, and healthcare options, and refer and link students to resources to address any gaps in basic needs
- Meet regularly with clients to support accomplishment of treatment plan goals set by therapist when needed
- Support students that walk into the Counseling Center with triage and urgent needs
- Administer Survivor Support Fund and organize annual fundraising event for the fund
- Complete and maintain client records to document services provided using clinical best practices and in accordance with Counseling Center policies
- Maintain ethical, professional relationships with student clients
- Regularly consult with clinical supervisor and other clinical staff for support around aligning with therapeutic treatment goals for clients, and for support of personal professional development goals.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508
- Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards
- Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation
The salary for this position is $45,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
