Schedule Details: Eight hour shifts available seven days per week 6 am-9:30 pm

Description: To operate a trolley, bus and/or minivans in transporting passengers; to ensure compliance with safety requirements and regulations by performing minor maintenance and safety checks on buses; to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility; and to provide a high level of customer service and public relations.

Essential Job Duties: The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned. Operates trolleys, buses, and minivans to transport passengers, including ADA-qualified passengers according to federal regulations. Performs light maintenance and safety checks on the vehicles as required by D.O.T. Performs pre-trip and post-trip safety and maintenance checks on vehicles; identifies defects and document on appropriate form. Ensures cleanliness and safety of bus throughout shift, and washes transit fleet as assigned by management. Drives vehicle on designated route according to established time schedule using defensive driving techniques. Ensures compliance of the transit system with FTA regulations, State and City policies in day-to-day aspects of the transit operation. Assists passengers requiring special assistance, including operating wheelchair lifts and restraints. Performs a variety of tasks as assigned by Lead Drivers and Transit Operations Manager. Provides a high level of customer service and public relations at all times. Records information on the number and type of passengers, fuel, mileage and related information. Ensures smooth transfers between routes by communicating with the dispatcher and other drivers. Participates in and utilizes knowledge and skills learned in on-going training.

Fiscal Responsibilities: Incumbent collects, records and accounts for fares collected.

City Organization Duties and Responsibilities: Represent the Department and City to other City staff and members of the public. Provide quality customer service to individuals needing assistance.

Supervisory Relationships: Works under the leadership of the Lead Transit Operators and under direct supervision of the Transit Supervisor. Incumbent does not supervise other employees.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Basic practices, methods, and equipment used in passenger transit systems. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Excellent public contact and customer service skills. Operation and maintenance of transportation equipment. Practices, methods, and materials used in transit work. Recordkeeping principles and practices.

Skill in: Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment. Reading and interpret policy and procedure manuals. Operating tablets and other technological equipment onboard buses. Communicating clearly and concisely primarily in verbal form. Accurately carrying out fare transactions. Independently solving problems caused by traffic hazards, weather conditions, unescorted children, disabled passengers and others.

Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Verbally communicate in an effective and tactful manner including deescalating situations with unhappy customers. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Uses a variety of electronic communication devices, including two-way radios, following proper procedures. Safely assist passenger needing help to enter or exit vehicle safely including properly securing assistive equipment and devices. Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions. Work the allocated hours of the position.

Work Environment: Field environment includes frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, all types of weather and safety-related concerns such as traffic, passengers, weather and pedestrians.

Physical and Mental Requirements/Activities: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 75 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job. Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust and adapt to night driving, sun and snow glare, long periods of driving and frequent adjustment of focus. Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Certification: Equivalent to completion of High School or GED, and Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement.

Minimum Experience: One (1) year of experience operating passenger transportation vehicles a plus. Or a combination of education training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position duties and responsibilities.

Certifications Required: Must maintain a valid, CDL license with PI endorsement during employment. Upon employment incumbent is expected to attain and maintain the following certifications: CPR/AED and First Aid.
