Historic Planner/Preservation Coordinator/Grant Writer

The City of Cumberland is seeking individuals interested in employment as an Historic Planner/Preservation Coordinator/Grant Writer in the Department of Community Development.
CLASS SUMMARY: Responsible for the coordination and staff review of applications for Certificates of Appropriateness (COA) and making staff recommendations to the Historic Preservation Commission, as well as providing technical information and support to property owners. Assists in the development and growth of heritage tourism within the area. Responsibilities also include researching and managing grant programs on the local, state, and federal levels and taking the lead in grant writing for historic preservation, parks and rec and other community development grant applications. Sometimes involves strategic planning. Works with neighborhood revitalization projects, at times providing project management.
PREFERENCES: We require a high school diploma or G.E.D. and a minimum of 3 years of related experience.
The ideal candidate will have: • A Bachelor of Arts degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, architectural history, art history, historic Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61. • 5 years’ experience in historic preservation, historic research, or cultural resource management or related experience; or equivalent combination of education. • Excellent computer and word processing skills using MS Office products and data management systems • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying National Park Service guidance and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, as well as other state and local laws and guidelines concerning historic preservation. • Demonstrated ability to explain historic preservation requirements and offer guidance to COA applicants in a manner that takes into consideration their perspective • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team player • Demonstrated ability to understand the role of the Historic Preservation Coordinator and how it fits within the overall strategic direction of the Mayor and City Council.
