The Durango Herald seeks an Editorial Assistant to work in its newsroom. This position fulfills a key role in gathering community information and clerical functions in support of newsroom editors.
Duties: Write news briefs for various print sections and online editions. Collect and prepare community content for publication. Prepare syndicated content for publication. Curate and prepare a calendar of events. Assist in posting to and monitoring social media accounts. Input content not sent electronically. Assist the public with finding information about archival content. Perform light copy-editing and proofreading. Provide administrative support to the editor. Perform some light reporting and writing online-only stories.
Requirements: Excellent writing and grammar skills. Good news judgment. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that can change at any minute and to meet multiple daily deadlines. Computer experience and comfort in learning new software. Research skills of current events and ability to monitor and use social media for news. This is an assistant position, but there is potential for future growth into a staff reporter position for qualified candidates seeking a journalism career.
